In late September 2019, finding it quite difficult to search for local Black-owned businesses to support, Tihitina asked her followers on Twitter to provide her with the names of all the Montreal Black businesses they knew. Although she was aware that there had to be more Black-owned businesses in Montreal than she was familiar with, she wasn’t expecting to discover hundreds of new ones. This inspired her to create a platform where others could easily find any type of service they might be looking for, from a community that is often overlooked due to racially based preconceived notions and are given less opportunities to highlight their work. Ultimately, the Black Montreal Businesses Instagram page was launched on September 29th, 2019. A few weeks later, Titi met her future partner, Shirley. They both shared a love for their community and an undeniable need to also make a change within it which is why it only felt natural to them to become partners in this project. Once partnered, the focus was on growing the following of the page and making sure the platform was well-known, so that it could give some well deserved exposure to the businesses they feature. Once that goal was achieved, it was time to expand out of Instagram so that the platform could reach a larger crowd of any age. All in all, the goal for this website is for it to be your first stop when looking for a service. Happy shopping! Thank you for buying local and black!
